The inspiration for a career development centre came from Zola Madikizela who grew up in the countryside of the Mbizana district, in the Eastern Cape Province. He felt passionately that it was important to develop a decentralized model of a Career Development Programme suitable for a rural town with limited access to formal tertiary institutions, assessment centres and other similar resources. Believing that a lack of alignment with subjects and career choices that conflict with available interest and abilities against the future market placement are some of the main causes of youth unemployment. Zola approached long-time associate and colleague, Dr Irwin Friedman, a medical doctor and health advocacy professional as well as the director of the SEED Trust based in the Kwa-Zulu Natal midlands and together they jointly proposed the germ of the idea to the Atlantic Philanthropies during 2018.
